Virtual Classrooms Expand Learning

Immersive Educational Programs in the Galapagos

Nuestros estudiantes regresan a casa transformados.

Time for Ocean Exploration!

Students from the Runakunapak school met with boat captain Victor Rault, Captain Darwin project. In a fantastic small sailboat, he is retracing the HMS Beagle voyage. Combining exploration, science, and education to document the past, present and future of biodiversity.

Students from Isabela, San Cristóbal and Floreana islands connected via Zoom with the M/V Nautilus, a research vessel equipped with a submersible to explore the ocean’s depths. They learned about the vessel and got to be part of the real-time exploration. It was thrilling to witness their faces light up with curiosity and excitement as they uncovered the wonders beneath the sea.

Captain Polo Inspires Climate Action

Celebrating his 10th year, Captain Polo is on a sabbatical, in Galápagos!

Remember Captain Polo? He arrived to the Islands in May (see our previous missive), kicking off his sabbatical with a trip on the Dutch Tailship Oosterschelde. With the Darwin200 project he met students, learnt about conservation efforts and had a lovely chat with Sarah Darwin.

Galápagos school children have been learning about climate change this year, and here comes a surprise! Captain Polo along with the first three books of his adventures are set to light up the classrooms, accompanied by his exciting climate change adventure game that mixes snakes and ladders with trivial pursuit. Thanks to support of local teachers, we developed a useful guide which aligns the books with the local curriculum and learning skills.

Enjoy this short video of Captain Polo popping into the community library on their birthday.

For now, Captain Polo has gone off on a short escapade to Cali, Colombia! Yes, COP16 climate & biodiversity action. He hitched a ride with our dear friend Alberto Andrade, Frente Insular of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, to fly our colors and message high, and meet like-minded activists. Can’t stop him! Stay tuned for posts on our networks.

The value of cooperation in our field of work

We’re grateful for the recent opportunities to further explore cooperation in the field of Ocean Literacy, Experiential Education, and Connection to Nature with amazing partners and friends from near and far, forging new paths forward for impactful and sustainable action!

August: In collaboration with Galapagos Conservation Trust, we held a productive 2-day working group around evaluation of environmental education initiatives bringing together actors from the Galápagos Agreement for Education from 3 islands. It sparks motivation and magic. We had experienced this in our 2020 and 2022 get-togethers. Our commitment: keep up regular meetings within our community of practice.

September: With the support of Catalyste+, Isaac, an expert advisor who helped us build our strategic plan in 2023, finally made it out to the islands. He provided support to Education4Nature, El Mangle Agile Learning Center, Frente Insular RMG, Galápagos Endemik and Mycelium. By growing together we help each other through the inflection points of entrepreneurship to improve our programs, their delivery and collective return.

October: Joy, learning and camaraderie grew out of the 2-week immersive Oceans For All Alliance training we received from the I AM WATER Foundation who came all the way from South Africa to share their methodology. We were thrilled to be with collaborators from San Cristobal, Isabela, Ayange, Ballenita, Montañita, Manta and even Patagonia. This is just the beginning!

A year ago, from the ship Carina, the Galápagos Infinito program embarked on an exciting journey of connection. Here, we unite the children of Galápagos with the sea, their home and their rich island culture.

We work with 7th grade students, an age full of curiosity and thirst for knowledge. On this journey, they absorb wisdom, enjoy experiences and explore the most remote corners of the archipelago.

The tourism sector, the boats and their lovers are our allies in this adventure. Together, we ensure that children reach all the wonderful corners of our Galápagos Islands. 🌊🏝

Film credit: Joshua Vela; Children and teachers: Carlos Darwin School, San Cristóbal

School on board: Yacht Carina

After 4 years, we have fulfilled a dream that leads us towards our goal: to give the children of the Galapagos the opportunity to connect and get to know their home. Thanks to the family that owns the Yacht Carina, we were able to accompany 11 students from the Carlos Darwin Rural School in San Cristóbal, and a girl from the Agile Learning Center El Mangle, to discover a magical corner of their islands. The trip was from Saturday, September 24 to Monday, September 26.

The tour began with the arrival of the students from San Cristóbal to Puerto Ayora, at the foot of the majestic Albatross, where we read such an important message to nourish our adventures. Then they discovered the Escalesia forest on the upper part of Santa Cruz Island and Los Gemelos. We boarded the Carina Yacht with a view towards the islands of Daphne Mayor and Daphne Menor. Our afternoon activity was a visit to North Seymour Island. In the early morning we sailed to Sullivan Bay between Santiago Island and Bartolomé Island. It was a full day of visits to land, exploration in the sea, walking on the beach and climbing to the island’s lookout point. The boys and girls were able to practice their Nature Diary, saw new species such as penguins, and were very excited about the swimming and snorkeling activities.

On Monday, after saying goodbye to the Yate Carina, its charismatic and friendly crew, and the blue-footed boobies on the shore, we visited a lava tunnel in the upper part of Santa Cruz, in the area where pirates knew they would come more than 300 years ago! The tunnel was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. We walked through the history of the formation of the island and its first visitors. The giant tortoises also accompanied us on the visit!

For the first time in the history of the Galapagos, children from all the islands asked questions live to astronaut Victor Glover who spoke from the International Space Station.

Galapagos Calling the International Space Station

Astronaut Victor Glover spoke with student in the Galapagos while aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Using the amateur radio telebridge network, Glover answered questions from students about his experiences in space and the significance of the ISS.

He shared his awe when viewing Earth from space, and described its beauty, complexity, and vibrant appearance. Students inquired about everyday life in microgravity, and Glover explained how astronauts eat and drink in space, emphasizing the fun of floating food.

When asked about his childhood aspirations, he revealed he wanted to be a police officer like his father.

Glover explained the ISS’s multifaceted role as a laboratory, manufacturing facility, and hub for scientific and communications research. He stressed the importance of their work in understanding and protecting Earth’s oceans and environment. A special moment occurred in the conversation when he confirmed seeing the Galapagos Islands from space!

The session concluded when the ISS moved below the horizon.

The conversation showcases the ISS’s educational outreach, sparking curiosity and fostering connections between space exploration and life on Earth.
