Dear Friends of Galapagos Infinito,

It feels amazing to be back on the Ocean. Our community, public and private articulation has enabled us to bring the Oceanic Classroom onboard the Ballenato to the 7th graders of 5 schools of San Cristobal Island. Sailing daily for 7 days over the course of two weeks, we are reaching 108 students. For many of them it is the first time on a boat, first time visiting Playa Ochoa Beach, and first time snorkeling.

At the helm of the boat, studying a navigational chart, spotting wildlife at sea, or exploring the habitable area of the boat, the students interact with the Capitan, deckhand and naturalist guide, learning about life at sea and the Islands’ wonders.

Once at the beach, we implement our locally adapted Ocean Connection Workshop methodology developed by I Am Water Foundation, which we trained for as part of the Oceans For All Alliance. Our facilitators lead the students through a practice of breathing, mindfulness and yoga; followed by an engaging moment of Ocean Literacy to reflect on the benefits we receive from the Ocean, and why the Ocean needs us in return. Then we dive into the three exploration stations: water safety & snorkeling; nature walk; and intertidal exploration. After a well deserved lunch, free time to play in the sea, and a sharing circle to close our time on the beach, it’s time to get back on board and continue exploring our wild Galapagos volcanic coastlines.

Over the next 3 months, we need to take Ballenato sailboat to Floreana, Isabela and Santa Cruz, to reach 400 more students before the end of the school year to reach our objective of ocean access to all 7th graders in the province. Can you help?

Infinite gratitude,

Noémi

Coming Up! #GivingTuesday on 3rd December, 2024

Our 2024 message: Gratitude for 5 years! Each year has brought new experiences, new supporters, new challenges, new growth. And we are grateful! For everything we have been given, and our ability to give back. The children’s smiles and spontaneous testimonies speak beyond words.

Stay tuned for exciting updates on December 3rd.

Students from Isabela, San Cristóbal and Floreana islands connected via Zoom with the M/V Nautilus, a research vessel equipped with a submersible to explore the ocean’s depths. They learned about the vessel and got to be part of the real-time exploration. It was thrilling to witness their faces light up with curiosity and excitement as they uncovered the wonders beneath the sea.

Celebrating his 10th year, Captain Polo is on a sabbatical, in Galápagos!

Remember Captain Polo? He arrived to the Islands in May (see our previous missive), kicking off his sabbatical with a trip on the Dutch Tailship Oosterschelde. With the Darwin200 project he met students, learnt about conservation efforts and had a lovely chat with Sarah Darwin.

Galápagos school children have been learning about climate change this year, and here comes a surprise! Captain Polo along with the first three books of his adventures are set to light up the classrooms, accompanied by his exciting climate change adventure game that mixes snakes and ladders with trivial pursuit. Thanks to support of local teachers, we developed a useful guide which aligns the books with the local curriculum and learning skills.

Enjoy this short video of Captain Polo popping into the community library on their birthday.

For now, Captain Polo has gone off on a short escapade to Cali, Colombia! Yes, COP16 climate & biodiversity action. He hitched a ride with our dear friend Alberto Andrade, Frente Insular of the Galapagos Marine Reserve, to fly our colors and message high, and meet like-minded activists. Can’t stop him! Stay tuned for posts on our networks.

We’re grateful for the recent opportunities to further explore cooperation in the field of Ocean Literacy, Experiential Education, and Connection to Nature with amazing partners and friends from near and far, forging new paths forward for impactful and sustainable action!

Galapagos Conservation Trust

August: In collaboration with Galapagos Conservation Trust, we held a productive 2-day working group around evaluation of environmental education initiatives bringing together actors from the Galápagos Agreement for Education from 3 islands. It sparks motivation and magic. We had experienced this in our 2020 and 2022 get-togethers. Our commitment: keep up regular meetings within our community of practice.

Catalyste+

September: With the support of Catalyste+, Isaac, an expert advisor who helped us build our strategic plan in 2023, finally made it out to the islands. He provided support to Education4Nature, El Mangle Agile Learning Center, Frente Insular RMG, Galápagos Endemik and Mycelium. By growing together we help each other through the inflection points of entrepreneurship to improve our programs, their delivery and collective return.

Oceans For All Alliance

October: Joy, learning and camaraderie grew out of the 2-week immersive Oceans For All Alliance training we received from the I AM WATER Foundation who came all the way from South Africa to share their methodology. We were thrilled to be with collaborators from San Cristobal, Isabela, Ayange, Ballenita, Montañita, Manta and even Patagonia. This is just the beginning!

A year ago, from the ship Carina, the Galápagos Infinito program embarked on an exciting journey of connection. Here, we unite the children of Galápagos with the sea, their home and their rich island culture.

We work with 7th grade students, an age full of curiosity and thirst for knowledge. On this journey, they absorb wisdom, enjoy experiences and explore the most remote corners of the archipelago.

The tourism sector, the boats and their supporters are our allies in this adventure. Together, we ensure that children reach all the wonderful corners of our Galápagos Islands. 🌊🏝

School On Board Yacht Carina

After 4 years, we have fulfilled a dream that leads us towards our goal: to give the children of the Galapagos the opportunity to connect and get to know their home. Thanks to the family that owns the Yacht Carina, we were able to accompany 11 students from the Carlos Darwin Rural School in San Cristóbal, and a girl from the Agile Learning Center El Mangle, to discover a magical corner of their islands. The trip was from Saturday, September 24 to Monday, September 26.

The tour began with the arrival of the students from San Cristóbal to Puerto Ayora, at the foot of the majestic Albatross, where we read such an important message to nourish our adventures. Then they discovered the Escalesia forest on the upper part of Santa Cruz Island and Los Gemelos. We boarded the Carina Yacht with a view towards the islands of Daphne Mayor and Daphne Menor.

Our afternoon activity was a visit to North Seymour Island. In the early morning we sailed to Sullivan Bay between Santiago Island and Bartolomé Island. It was a full day of visits to land, exploration in the sea, walking on the beach and climbing to the island’s lookout point. The boys and girls were able to practice their Nature Diary, saw new species such as penguins, and were very excited about the swimming and snorkeling activities.

On Monday, after saying goodbye to the Yate Carina, its charismatic and friendly crew, and the blue-footed boobies on the shore, we visited a lava tunnel in the upper part of Santa Cruz, in the area where pirates knew they would come more than 300 years ago!

The tunnel was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. We walked through the history of the formation of the island and its first visitors. The giant tortoises also accompanied us on the visit!

In June and September of this year, within the framework of the implementation of the Contextualized Curriculum with a focus on Sustainability for Galapagos, and the Alliance for Inclusive Experiential Learning and Community Science project, executed by the Naveducando Foundation, EPI-Galápagos and the Charles Darwin Foundation, we took more than 500 children from all 7th grades in the province on Experiential Learning Scenarios (EVAs) outings.

Marine-Coastal Ecosystems Field Trips in the Galapagos

We provided students with a field notebook that they took with them on the June field trips on the theme of marine-coastal ecosystems and on the September field trips on the theme of responsible fishing. In total, 16 schools from the 4 islands participated in the field trips, with the support of 25 educators from different organizations who joined in to carry out the activities. We thank each of them for their dedication and interest in accompanying the students: Asociación Uniendo Fuerzas Formamos Futuro in Isabela, Education 4 Nature and Jocotoco in San Cristóbal, along with other passionate young educators, EPI-Galápagos, FCD, Frente Insular de la RMG.

In June we visited the sites of Punta Carola, La Lobería and Playa El Oro in San Cristóbal, Garrapatero, Tortuga Bay and La Ratonera in Santa Cruz, El Estero and Playa del Amor in Isabela, and La Loberia in Floreana. The children enjoyed outdoor learning and educational games that provided new perspectives on the topics covered in class.

Learning Different Forms of Fishing in the Galapagos

In September, we had the support of 10 artisanal fishermen from the Galapagos who accompanied the students to the different islands, sharing their experiences and their daily work aboard their own boats. These short trips were complemented with activities about the Galapagos Marine Reserve, the New Hermandad Reserve and different forms of fishing.

It is was a great day in the Galapagos Islands with our friends from the Alliance for Education and Research in Galapagos!

We started our adventure in El Cascajo and headed to the catamaran Adriana to visit the North Seymour and Mosquera islands.

On board the boat we imagined what animals we were going to see and so we got to know each other. Teacher Mercedes said something very nice: she wanted all the children to enjoy and learn more about their environment on this adventure! We learned about the rules of a boat, the use and handling of its tools and the safety measures of a yacht.

During this mission, the children of Galapagos were able to see sharks, blue-footed boobies, frigates and many land iguanas. Together with the guides, David and Fausto, they learned to differentiate the males from the females of each species.

We had the best experience in the water! We swam with sea lions, snorkeled, and enjoyed the beach.

We also put into practice our knowledge about invasive species and their impact on our ecosystem. We were able to analyze what was an endemic or native species and what was an invasive species like African snails.

The children of Galápagos Infinito had a beautiful day of exploration and learning. The most inspiring thing was what they told us at the end of the trip: “we want to be the caretakers of our island!”

Many thanks to Ana María Andrade, to the guides David Guzmán and Fausto Rodríguez for their knowledge, to Michael Weisberg and Maddie Tilyou from Galapagos Alliance, and the crew of the yacht Adriana for hosting this fun mission.
